UNRWA Warns of Famines in Northern Gaza

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned today, Tuesday, of a famine in northern Gaza, where aid barely reaches after the closure of the Kerem Shalom crossing for six days. The agency expressed concerns over the escalation of military operations in Rafah, where the population has increased sixfold compared to before the war.

The UN agency emphasized the need to support its ongoing operations, stating that it cannot be jeopardized because of individuals, pointing out that a political solution is necessary. UNRWA urged countries that have suspended their support to reconsider their decisions, otherwise the agency will be forced to take decisive measures to reduce its operations even in Gaza.

UNRWA was established in 1949 and is currently facing a process of liquidation amid intensifying Israeli blockade and aggression on Gaza. Israel has accused UNRWA of being "completely infiltrated by Hamas" and claimed that 12 of its 13,000 staff members in Gaza are involved in the attack launched by the movement on October 7th.
