The young parliament member, Soukaina Lahmouch, attracted attention within the parliamentary chamber with her striking beauty and provocative attire, sparking a debate and questions among Moroccans. Lahmouch appeared in parliament wearing tight clothes and stated that the prices of sacrificial animals for the upcoming Eid are extremely high and unbearable, especially for the vulnerable class. She addressed the Minister of Agriculture: "What are you doing to ensure the purchase of a sacrificial animal for 800 dirhams as you previously stated?"
This statement followed complaints from Moroccans about the rising prices of livestock as Eid al-Adha approaches each year. Despite government statements and media reports indicating a surplus of livestock in Morocco, polls circulated in Moroccan news sites reveal widespread discontent in the country due to exorbitant prices that will prevent many families from celebrating the holiday as they usually do, to the extent that some called for the abandonment of the sacrificial ritual. This evokes the King's announcement in 1963 regarding the cancellation of the slaughter ritual due to what was known at the time as the "Sand War" between Morocco and Algeria, which impacted the country's economic situation.
As for the deputy's appearance, reactions and comments from followers on the platform "X" (formerly Twitter) shifted from discussing the high prices of sacrificial animals and the issues faced by Moroccans each year to focusing on the provocative manner in which the deputy presented herself. One follower commented to Lahmouch, "In some comments, you may find sheep, choose one, the second is free."
The young parliament member, Soukaina Lahmouch, nicknamed "the beauty of parliament," became a topic of conversation on social media due to her lost bulldog, Bella. In June 2022, Lahmouch posted on her official Instagram account a call for her followers to help find her dog "Lola," which had gone missing in one of the neighborhoods in Rabat. She promised a reward to anyone who finds her dog, shocking activists at the time since such posts were not common among Moroccan politicians.
Soukaina Lahmouch is a member of parliament for the Popular Movement Party, holding a Master’s degree in Political Science from the UK and a Bachelor's degree in French Law from Mohammed V University in Rabat. She won a seat in the elections for the Kenitra-Salé constituency despite her young age. She is a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs, and Moroccans Living Abroad in the Moroccan Parliament, and she is also the daughter of influential parliament member and political bureau member in the Popular Movement Party, Mohamed Lahmouch.
