Angry Night Demonstrations Shake Tehran

Tehran witnessed new angry demonstrations last Friday evening, a week after protests erupted following the death of a young woman arrested by the morality police for her "improper attire," leading to the death of at least 17 people. Video clips shared on social media, which the Agence France-Presse confirmed, showed a man in military uniform firing at protesters, the number of whom has not yet been specified, in the Shahry area in southern Tehran. Other footage documented protesters running in front of the Park Royal Hotel in northern Tehran, where chaos and fires were reported on the street. The sound of at least eight gunshots, the source of which was not identified, was heard. Activists and media reported that protesters clashed with security forces in several Iranian cities, burned police vehicles, and shouted anti-government slogans. Iranian media reported that the police arrested an unspecified number of people, including activist Majid Takloo and journalist Niloufar Hamidi, according to close sources.
