An Egyptian court fined a husband 50,000 EGP for divorcing his wife via Facebook in a public broadcast, intending to serve as a deterrent to others regarding the seriousness of divorce and the importance of its proper execution. The first misdemeanor circuit at the Economic Court of Qena ruled in a session that the husband should be fined 50,000 EGP and pay a compensation of 5,000 EGP for disturbing his wife by divorcing her live on social media and using phrases that caused her psychological harm.
The incident dates back to March 2023 when a woman filed a complaint against her husband for using his Facebook account to deliberately disturb and harass her by broadcasting live with statements such as "You are divorced" in front of her father's house due to marital disputes.
The wife, the "victim," submitted several video clips in her complaint to the Information Technology Department of Qena Security Directorate, proving her distress caused by her husband’s words, which inflicted significant psychological and moral harm. The case was referred to the Economic Court of Qena, which ruled to fine the defendant 50,000 EGP and imposed a compensation of 5,000 EGP.
