Houthi Movement Prevents Yemeni Airlines Plane from Leaving Sana'a

Aviation sources and others from Yemenia Airlines announced to Reuters that the Houthi group prevented a plane belonging to the company from leaving Sana'a International Airport today, Sunday. They added that this action comes in response to the company's decision to suspend its only international commercial flight from the Yemeni capital to Jordan after the Houthi-aligned administration prevented the airline from withdrawing its funds from banks in Sana'a.

Sources, who requested anonymity, stated that the plane arrived yesterday evening, Saturday, from Amman just hours before the company's suspension of flights from Sana'a to Jordan took effect. It was noted that the plane was supposed to leave as usual to the city of Aden in the south of the country, which the internationally recognized government considers its temporary capital.

Four executives from Yemenia Airlines, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, mentioned yesterday that the company would suspend its only international flight from Sana'a to Jordan. The sources reported that the company suggested that the Houthi government's share of the revenues be 70 percent, while the remaining 30 percent would go to the internationally recognized government.

The airline resumed its flights from Sana'a to the Jordanian capital Amman in April 2022. The Houthis, allied with Iran, ousted the Saudi-backed government from Sana'a in late 2014 and have effectively controlled the heavily populated northern Yemen, which includes Sana'a.
