Elderly Man Killed by Lightning Strike in Erbil

A local Iraqi source reported today, Friday, the death of an elderly man after being struck by lightning in the city of Erbil. Three members of the Peshmerga forces were also injured yesterday, Thursday, due to a lightning strike within the boundaries of the "Mirkosur" district, north of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.

Erbil has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days, which is expected to continue until this coming Sunday, resulting in floods and torrents in several areas.

The Competitions Committee of the Iraqi Football Association announced the postponement of the match between Erbil and its guest, Karakh, for the fourteenth round of the Iraqi Premier League. Erbil club board member Mousa Mohsen stated that "the match scheduled for 7 PM has been postponed after the pitch at Franco Hariri Stadium was flooded with rainwater due to the heavy rainfall in Erbil."

He added that "the Erbil administration, along with the match supervisor and referees, inspected the stadium and assessed the situation, confirming that it was impossible to hold the match on the field." He confirmed that "the Iraqi federation is expected to issue a statement determining a new date for today’s match."
