Exceptionally.. Opening of the Closed Land Borders between Morocco and Algeria

On Thursday, the "Zouj Bghal" border crossing between Algeria and Morocco was opened exceptionally to transfer the body of a 29-year-old Moroccan man who had died in Algerian territory. Hassan Ammari, president of the Migrants Assistance Association, stated that the deceased, originally from the Taza region, passed away about a week ago. The association, through its representative in Algeria and in cooperation with the Moroccan consulate in Algiers, was able to complete the necessary procedures for the rapid transportation of his body.

Ammari highlighted in a statement to "Hespress" that the young man had been living irregularly in the Qalmah province in northeastern Algeria with two of his brothers, where he worked in a trade before suffering a heart attack that led to his death. Algeria cut diplomatic ties with Morocco in August 2021, accusing Rabat of "hostile acts," a move that Morocco deemed "completely unjustified."

In October of the same year, Algeria halted the flow of gas through pipelines to Spain that passed through Moroccan territory in the northern part of the country. Later, Moroccan planes were prohibited from crossing Algerian airspace. Tensions between the two countries escalated amid media exchanges and verbal conflicts. In March 2023, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced that the rift between the two countries had reached a point of no return.
