Demonstration Demanding the Dismissal of the Mayor of a District in Basra

Today, Saturday, residents of the al-Sadiq district in northern Basra held a demonstration calling for the dismissal of the district mayor and for the improvement of services. It was reported that the residents of al-Sadiq, which has a population of 140,000, organized the first peaceful preliminary protest to demand the mayor's removal and to choose a replacement, in addition to improving services in their areas due to governmental oppression, marginalization, and exclusion. Protesters stated that if the local government does not respond to their demands, the protests will continue with potentially severe consequences from the district's residents.
