In a rare case, a woman from Alabama in the United States, who has two wombs due to a congenital anomaly, has given birth to two healthy daughters. Kelsey Hatcher, now a mother of five children, announced via social media that she and her husband Caleb welcomed Roxy Layla on Tuesday evening, followed by her sister Rebel Laken the following morning at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. Kelsey wrote on Instagram, "Our miracle babies have arrived! They decided they were unique enough statistically to each have their own birthday too."
Hatcher has a rare condition of a double uterus and carried one fetus in each side, which is also a rare pregnancy with odds of one in a million. Shweta Patel, Kelsey’s obstetrician, noted in a press release from the hospital, "I cared for Kelsey during her third pregnancy and knew she had a double uterus, but then there was only one fetus. Two babies in two wombs was truly a medical surprise."
As Kelsey’s pregnancy was considered high-risk, she gave birth at thirty-nine weeks. After a total of 20 hours of labor, the two babies were born. While a typical twin pregnancy is defined as having two babies in one womb, Richard Davis, a doctor who assisted in the pregnancy follow-up, stated, "The girls can be described as fraternal twins."
The first baby was delivered naturally, as were Kelsey’s previous three children, while her sister was born via cesarean section. Kelsey wrote on social media, "I can't wait to share the full birth story with you guys. While we are all home now, we will take our time bonding, recovering, and enjoying the holidays."
