EU Provides Significant Funding to Tunisia to Combat Migration

According to the Financial Times reported on Sunday, the European Union will provide Tunisian security forces with up to €164.5 million ($177.74 million) over three years. The newspaper added, citing informed sources, that Brussels had committed to providing €105 million to Tunisia aimed at reducing migration in an agreement signed last year, but most of it has not yet been disbursed. The Financial Times indicated that the EU will generally increase spending on migration through various funding sources over the next three years, with about two-thirds of the expected total of €278 million allocated for security and border management. The report also clarified that the programs funded by the EU for the Tunisian security forces include a training academy for the Tunisian coast guard, implemented by the German federal police, and that the funds will be used to purchase equipment, including radars and vessels for the coast guard, as well as establishing land border points. It is noteworthy that this month, the EU disbursed €150 million to Tunisia to support the budget, aiming for financial stability and economic reforms.
