The Israeli army announced that it "discovered a tunnel network stretching hundreds of meters, with part of it located beneath the premises of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza." The army described this as new evidence of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) exploiting the main relief agency for Palestinians. Army engineers escorted foreign media reporters through the tunnels at a time when UNRWA is facing a crisis following allegations from Israel last month that some agency employees are also Hamas members. UNRWA has opened an internal investigation into the matter, while some donor countries have decided to freeze their funding to the agency. Palestinians accused Israel of spreading false information to undermine UNRWA, which employs 13,000 people in the Gaza Strip and serves as a lifeline for residents who have relied on aid for years. The agency operates schools, primary healthcare clinics, and other social services, in addition to distributing aid, and describes its activities as purely humanitarian.
