A knowledgeable source told Reuters that negotiations mediated by Qatar between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza continued on Saturday, despite Israel escalating its attacks on the territory. The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, stated that the talks had not collapsed but were proceeding "at a much slower pace" than before the escalation that began on Friday evening.
Communications between besieged Gaza residents and the outside world were nearly severed on Saturday as Israeli aircraft dropped additional bombs in conjunction with a ground assault. Qatar has been engaged in behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts for more than three weeks, discussing with Hamas and Israeli officials to promote peace and secure the release of hostages.
Qatar's mediation has led to the release of two American hostages, a mother and daughter, as well as two elderly Israeli women. Qatar maintains a direct line of communication with Hamas, which has a political office in Doha. Qatari envoys have previously assisted in mediating truces between the movement and Israel.
