Japan Restores Contact with the Lunar Module SLIM

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) announced that experts have successfully restored contact with the lunar module SLIM, which had been in a dormant state since the beginning of this month. Agency experts had concerns that temperature changes due to the onset of the lunar night would complicate the re-establishment of communication with the lunar module. However, they managed to restore contact with ease.

It is noted that the Japanese lunar module SLIM landed on the surface of the Moon on January 20, 2024, but was subsequently powered down due to issues with energy supply from its solar cells and was operating on a built-in battery. It was restarted on January 29 after the angle of sunlight falling on the Moon changed, and afterward, it captured images of the surrounding area using a specialized spectral camera.
