White House Denies Report of U.S. and Iran Approaching Temporary Nuclear Agreement

The White House denied a media report today, Thursday, stating that the United States and Iran are nearing a temporary agreement to reduce Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions. A spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House said, "The report is inaccurate and misleading," referring to an article on the Middle East Eye website. They added, "Any reports of a temporary agreement are false."

The report cited two sources indicating that Iran and the United States were "closer to a temporary agreement to limit Iranian uranium enrichment activities in exchange for the lifting of some sanctions." It said that "both sides had reached an agreement on establishing a temporary deal to be presented to their leaders." The report also stated that Iran would commit to halting uranium enrichment to 60 percent purity or higher and would continue cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency in exchange for permission to export up to one million barrels of oil daily and to access its "frozen income and other funds abroad."
