Bassil: The Goal of My Visit to Paris Has Been Achieved

The head of the "Free Patriotic Movement," MP Gebran Bassil, announced that he did not run for the presidency "to facilitate matters, and he has waived a basic right. However, if this is portrayed differently and we are accused of obstruction, then it contradicts logic." In an interview with France 24, he confirmed that "he met with those he needed to meet in Paris at his request," explaining that "the goal of the visit has been realized."

He stated, "I usually do not disclose the meetings I hold. The crisis in Lebanon is complex, and one of its main facets is the presidential vacancy. However, there is also a governmental vacancy, a lack of reform, and institutional paralysis, with the only existing institution, the Parliament, unable to function independently according to our system."

He indicated that he presented "a comprehensive vision for a solution that can get us out of stagnation, which is not only related to names but also involves fortifying any chosen name with a vision for how to achieve reform." He noted that "there are candidates supported by foreign powers, but there is an opportunity for the Lebanese to elect a president made in Lebanon."

Bassil said, "We do not wish to propose a non-serious candidate with no chance of success; that is why we vote by white ballot. I did not run to complicate matters to avoid a vacancy and to reach an agreement on a president who can succeed."

He reiterated his refusal to support the candidacy of the head of the "Maronite Movement," Sleiman Frangieh, stating, "We do not agree with him on the political reform program for building the state. While we understand the positions of other parties, such as Hezbollah, concerning protecting the country and resistance, we see that the priority is to build the state without conflicting with Lebanon's protection."
