Joana Sanz defended her husband, Brazilian football player Dani Alves, who is accused of raping a girl in a nightclub in late 2022. She revealed that he was drunk, providing evidence of this by saying he crashed into a wardrobe at their home before falling onto the bed that night. The trial of the Brazilian star for the sexual assault of a girl at a nightclub in Barcelona began last Monday, following his arrest on January 20, 2023, after investigations.
The court heard testimonies from several people involved in the case, including Alves and the girl, who testified remotely with voice alteration to protect her identity. Sanz testified in court as one of the many witnesses, stating, "He came home that night drunk and lost consciousness on the bed. It was pointless to talk to him in that condition, which led me to wait until the following morning."
She confirmed that she had communicated with him that night before he came home, adding, "I spoke to him on one of the messaging apps and asked him if he could come over for dinner together, but he declined. I don't remember what happened after that, but it was around eleven o'clock at night." Alves's lawyer had previously stated before the judge that his client does not remember what happened after consuming a large amount of alcohol, aiming to reduce his sentence by taking advantage of a provision in Spanish criminal law.
