King Charles has granted royal assent to key legislation regarding Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda. The royal assent is the final stage in the legislative process and essentially serves as approval of the decision made by Parliament earlier this week to approve the bill after a lengthy battle between the government and opponents of the plan. The royal assent was announced in the House of Lords today, meaning that the Rwanda Safety Bill (Asylum and Immigration) has become law. Parliament approved the bill in the early hours of Tuesday. Sunak stated on Monday that he expects the first flights to Rwanda to take off within ten to twelve weeks from the enactment.
