A fishing company on Kunashir Island (southern Kuril Islands in the Sakhalin region) has caught a sailfish that inhabits the tropical regions of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. A source from the Sakhalin branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography stated, "This is a rare case of discovering this fish that lives in tropical waters. It was first discovered in Peter the Great Bay in the early 20th century, and this is the second recorded instance of finding this creature in our waters."
It is noted that this species of sailfish is classified as a predatory marine fish with ray-finned fins from the family Istiophoridae, and it is the only one in the genus Istiophorus. It is the "fastest" swimming fish in the world, reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. It can grow up to 3.5 meters in length and weigh around 100 kg. This type of fish lives in tropical, subtropical, and temperate waters in all oceans.
