Two informed sources reported that Tesla CEO Elon Musk is on a flight to Beijing today, Sunday, to begin a surprise visit to his company's second-largest market. One of the sources noted that Musk will seek to meet with senior Chinese officials in Beijing to discuss the launch of self-driving software in China and obtain approval to transfer data collected in the country abroad for programming algorithms related to self-driving technologies. According to Chinese regulatory requirements, Tesla has been storing all data collected by its Chinese fleet in Shanghai since 2021 and has not transferred any of it to the United States. The American electric vehicle manufacturer launched the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, its most advanced self-driving software version, four years ago, but has not yet introduced it in China despite customer calls for it to do so.
