On Tuesday, Kaiserslautern announced the death of former player Andreas Brehme, who scored a late penalty to lead Germany to victory over Argentina in the 1990 FIFA World Cup final, winning their third title in the tournament, at the age of 63. Kaiserslautern stated: "Kaiserslautern mourns the passing of Andreas Brehme. He wore the red devils' shirt for ten years and became a champion of the league and the DFB-Pokal with Kaiserslautern." They added: "In 1990, he led the German national team to the World Cup title through a penalty kick and became a football legend. The Kaiserslautern family is in deep mourning, and our condolences go out to Andy’s family and friends."
The attacking left-back and set-piece specialist became a German football legend when he successfully converted a penalty to secure a 1-0 victory against Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, in the World Cup final in Rome. Brehme also played for Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, and other clubs before retiring in 1998. He made 86 international appearances for Germany and scored eight goals, including the one everyone remembers.
