Tunisian President Kais Saied pledged today, Wednesday, to ensure the safety of Jewish citizens and their temples following a meeting with the chief rabbi of the Jewish community in the country after a deadly attack on a synagogue. Saied stated, after meeting with the chief rabbi, the chief Christian bishop, and the Mufti of Tunisia, that the reception of religious leaders was a "historical message" of coexistence and tolerance. He added, "We will provide you with security in your temples. Live in safety and peace, and we will provide you with all the conditions for security." Chief Rabbi Haim Bitan remarked, "The president reassured us and gave us guarantees that what happened recently will not be repeated." The celebration in Djerba typically attracts hundreds of Jewish visitors from Europe and Israel and is held under strict security measures since extremists linked to Al-Qaeda attacked the synagogue in 2002 with a truck bomb, resulting in the deaths of 21 Western tourists.
