America Proposes Draft Resolution in the Security Council: Details Revealed

The United States has proposed a draft resolution to the United Nations Security Council that emphasizes "the Council's support for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible," according to a text reviewed by Reuters on Monday. The draft resolution also states that "under current circumstances, any significant ground assault on Rafah will further harm civilians and may lead to their displacement to neighboring countries." The draft warns that such a step "would have serious implications for regional peace and security, and thus, it is crucial to emphasize the necessity of not proceeding with such a large-scale ground assault under the current conditions."

It remains unclear when or if the draft resolution will be put to a vote. The United States proposed the resolution after Algeria requested that the 15-member Council vote on Tuesday on a draft resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for humanitarian reasons. Security Council resolutions require approval from at least nine members and the absence of a veto from the United States, France, Britain, Russia, or China. The United States quickly announced through its Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, that it would use its veto against the Algerian draft resolution.
