Thousands of Moroccans Protest in Support of Palestine

Thousands of Moroccans demonstrated in the capital Rabat today, Sunday, in support of the Palestinian cause, carrying slogans condemning "the crimes of the Zionist occupation and Morocco's continued normalization with Israel." Among these slogans were "Gaza.. Gaza, a symbol of dignity," "Palestine is a trust and normalization is betrayal," "No embassy, no ambassador, get out you disgrace," and "Crush, crush underfoot the Zionists and Americans." They also burned the Israeli flag.

The demonstrators, who came from various Moroccan cities, carried Palestinian flags, images of Al-Aqsa Mosque, and several pictures of martyrs from the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, which has lasted for over four months.

Moroccan human rights activist Abdelilah Ben Abdel Salam told Reuters that the demonstration was called by the Moroccan Front for Support of Palestine and Against Normalization, a civil society organization. He added: "There was a wide response and massive crowds from various segments of Moroccan society who came from different cities to express their condemnation of the continued war crimes and acts of aggression, genocide, and ethnic cleansing... committed by the Zionist entity against the Palestinian people."

He further stated, "The Palestinian people are subjected to forced displacement, which is internationally criminalized under international human rights documents, and the genocide in Gaza has not stopped despite a decision by the International Court of Justice... because the Zionist entity is protected by its partners, foremost among them the imperialist colonial West."

Ben Abdel Salam expressed "rejection of the continued normalization with a entity that kills children, women, the elderly, and people with disabilities." Morocco normalized relations with Israel on December 10, 2020, with American mediation in exchange for U.S. recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region between Rabat and the Polisario Front since 1976.
