Washington Welcomes Appointment of New Palestinian Authority Government

The U.S. State Department stated that the United States welcomes the appointment of a new Palestinian Authority government. Matthew Miller, the department's spokesperson, mentioned in a statement, "Renewing the Palestinian Authority is essential to achieving results for the Palestinian people in both the West Bank and Gaza and creating conditions for stability in the broader region." The Palestinian Authority announced on Thursday the formation of a new government while facing international pressure to implement reforms. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas revealed the formation of the new government through a presidential decree issued on Thursday. There are no prominent names among the members of the new Palestinian government. Abbas had tasked Mohammed Mustafa, a long-time advisor, with forming the new government earlier this month. Mustafa, a politically independent economist educated in the United States, pledged to establish a technocratic government and create an independent trust fund to assist in the reconstruction of Gaza. The United States has called for reforms within the Palestinian Authority to ensure it is prepared to govern the Gaza Strip once the war ends, paving the way for the eventual establishment of a Palestinian state.
