The book titled "A Girl's Story in a Men's Athletics World," written by former American long-distance runner Lauren Fleishman, has won the Best Sports Book Award for 2023 from William Hill, as announced today. Fleishman received £30,000 (approximately $37,920) along with significant publicity for her book.
Fleishman, who achieved success in the United States by winning the national championship title in the 5000 meters twice, participated in three World Championships but missed the Olympic Games. She later transitioned to coaching and sports analysis.
The book, which combines memoirs, anecdotes, and personal data, narrates her development, battles with injury, and her struggle for better treatment for female runners at both beginner and professional levels. This award marks the first time a women's memoir has won in its 35-year history, and it was one of four books written by women in the shortlist of six. Judges praised the book for its "engaging and honest storytelling" as well as its earnest call for improving conditions for women in sports.
