Tunisia Adopts Water Rationing Policy Due to Drought

Tunisian authorities began cutting drinking water supplies at night last week to reduce consumption amid a severe drought crisis the country has been facing for four years. This water cut affected some areas of the Tunisian capital and other regions. In this context, Yacine Mami, a deputy and official at the state-owned National Water Exploitation and Distribution Company, confirmed that the frequent water interruptions are due to a water rationing policy since the country is threatened by water scarcity.

Hamadi Habib, General Director of the Water Planning and Balances Office at the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that the inflows to Tunisian dams recorded a decrease of one billion cubic meters due to the lack of rainfall from September 2022 to mid-March 2023. Residents of the area are increasingly frustrated due to poor public services, significant inflation, and an almost collapsed economy. However, specialists say that authorities have no alternative but to ration water in an effort to reduce consumption amid an unprecedented drought and nearly empty dams.
