"New York Times": Increase in Desertions from the Ukrainian Army Due to Fear

The "New York Times" reported that pushing more men into the Ukrainian army has proven to be difficult, and the shortage of soldiers has become acute. The newspaper pointed out that the head of the military registration and recruitment office in Uzhhorod assures fighters that they will have a better chance of survival if they are well-trained. The head of the recruitment office stated, "Everyone is afraid of death, but we try to encourage them to look at it from a different perspective, from a survival standpoint." Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged that one of the units of the Ukrainian armed forces voluntarily abandoned its positions on the front line, resulting in the encirclement of other military personnel.
