Newcastle United returned to third place in the English Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Brentford, where player Ivan Toney missed a penalty for the first time in his career, on Saturday. Newcastle achieved their fifth consecutive win, bringing their total to 56 points from 29 matches, ahead of fourth-placed Manchester United on goal difference, who earlier won 2-0 against Everton.
This was only Brentford's second home loss this season, following their defeat against league leaders Arsenal in September, as manager Thomas Frank's team missed the opportunity to overtake eighth-placed Liverpool, remaining in ninth place with 43 points.
Alexander Isak, the goal scorer for Newcastle, said: "It was a tough match and it's hard to play here. The opponent hasn't lost here in a very long time, but we managed to turn things around with a different energy, and we are happy with the three points."
Newcastle came alive after the break, equalizing nine minutes into the second half when Joelinton sent a shot from a tight angle that deflected off goalkeeper David Raya and into the net.
Wilson put the ball into the net after following up a set-piece, but his celebrations were cut short after VAR intervened due to a handball by the striker, before goalkeeper Pope made a strong save from a Toney attempt.
