The wife of French President Brigitte Macron welcomed the sisters of Moroccan King Mohammed VI at the Élysée Palace on Monday, as announced by the French presidency, indicating a gradual return to warmth in bilateral relations after a prolonged period of chill. The French presidency posted on Instagram along with a picture stating, "Continuing the historical friendship between France and the Kingdom of Morocco, Mrs. Brigitte Macron hosted Princesses Lalla Meryem, Lalla Asmaa, and Lalla Hasna."
It added, "On this occasion, President Emmanuel Macron was present to welcome them," noting that the head of state "recently spoke on the phone with King Mohammed VI." The official Moroccan news agency, Maghreb Arab Press, reported that on Monday, "the princesses Lalla Meryem, Lalla Asmaa, and Lalla Hasna were received for a lunch at the Élysée Palace, at the invitation of Mrs. Brigitte Macron."
The agency highlighted that the lunch falls "within the framework of the continuity of the historical friendship between the Kingdom of Morocco and the French Republic." France is keen to renew ties of trust with Morocco, describing the bilateral relations as "essential." The new French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné stated, "We have resumed connections with Morocco. There was a misunderstanding that led to difficulties."
