Hala Ghrit, the Arabic spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, has resigned in protest against Washington's policy regarding the war in Gaza, marking at least the third resignation in the department concerning this issue. The department's website indicated that Hala was also the Deputy Director of the Regional Media Center in Dubai and had joined the State Department nearly two decades ago as a political and human rights official. She wrote on the social media platform LinkedIn, "I resigned in April 2024 after 18 years of distinguished service, in protest against the U.S. policy on Gaza."
A spokesperson for the State Department, when asked about the resignation at a press conference, stated, "The department has channels for its employees to express their views when they disagree with government policies." About a month prior, Anil Shelin from the Human Rights Office at the State Department also announced her resignation, as did official Ghosh Paul in October of last year. Additionally, senior U.S. Department of Education official Tarek Habash, an American of Palestinian descent, resigned from his position in January for similar reasons.
