Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani affirmed today, Wednesday, that Hamas' decision to agree to the ceasefire is responsible and stems from an assessment of the higher interests of the Palestinian people. The office of the Prime Minister stated that "Al-Sudani received a phone call from the Head of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian Hamas Movement, Ismail Haniyeh." According to the statement, Al-Sudani emphasized that "the decision made by Hamas to agree to the ceasefire is a responsible decision that comes from an understanding of the higher interests of the Palestinian people," noting that "Iraq supports this step, which could alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, and represents a response to the efforts of Arab brothers to end the suffering of the Palestinian people." He stressed the "necessity for the international community to take a stand to stop the war in Gaza, and for major countries to bear their responsibilities in preventing the continuation of aggression, especially with the occupation forces insisting on storming the Rafah crossing, causing a humanitarian disaster, and continuing to commit heinous crimes against civilians." For his part, during the call, Haniyeh provided a detailed explanation regarding Hamas' decision to agree to the ceasefire to stop the war in Gaza and in response to Arab efforts, expressing his "gratitude and appreciation for the support provided by Iraq, both the government and the people, whether through political stances or by sending urgent humanitarian aid to the besieged civilians in Gaza."
