Amanda Ilestedt scored a last-minute goal to lead Sweden to a 2-1 victory over South Africa in the opening match for both teams in Group G of the Women's World Cup on Sunday. From the 11th corner awarded to the Swedish team during the match, which took place under heavy rain in the capital of New Zealand, Ilestedt rose high to secure the winning goal in the 90th minute.
Ilestedt's goal capped off Sweden's comeback, after Fridolina Rolfo equalized in the 66th minute, taking advantage of a cross from Reiten Kanrid. Hilda Magaya had given South Africa the lead just two minutes into the second half.
With this win, Sweden, ranked third, tops Group G while awaiting the match between Italy and Argentina scheduled for tomorrow, Monday.
