Toxic smoke has covered part of the German capital, Berlin, due to a fire at a factory, prompting residents to receive emergency alerts marked "danger" from the civil defense authorities. At around 1 PM local time, Berlin residents and those in the surrounding areas received an emergency alert via a sound signal on their smartphones.
The message marked "danger" indicated that there was a fire at a factory in the Lichtenfeld area of Berlin, from which toxic smoke was emanating. Reports suggest that the fire occurred at a workshop within a mining factory where hazardous chemicals are present, and firefighting efforts are being conducted from outside.
Additionally, the message published on the civil defense authority's website stated: "Analysis of weather conditions and prevailing wind directions indicates that smoke gas clouds will move from the fire site towards the north. Everyone should adhere to instructions, even if smoke clouds are not visible."
Media reports have indicated that the fire broke out at a factory owned by the defense company Diehl, which produces components for the IRIS-T air defense system in Berlin.
