Local media praised a Chinese truck driver on Saturday for stopping his vehicle on a highway and preventing more cars from sliding down a slope after a section of the road collapsed in the mountainous south of the country, killing at least 48 people. Wang Xiangnan was driving on the highway in Guangdong Province, a vital economic hub in southern China. Local media reported that "around 2 a.m., Wang saw several vehicles moving in the opposite direction on the four-lane highway and was quickly informed by a fellow driver about the collapse." Wang was quoted by the "Jiubai" news agency saying it was a "quick reaction," as he, a former soldier, positioned his truck to block the highway, effectively preventing dozens of vehicles from advancing towards danger. At the same time, his wife got out of the truck to alert other drivers about the situation.
