Dispute Between Trump and Putin Over "Accused Spy Journalist"

Dispute Between Trump and Putin Over

The Kremlin commented today, Thursday, on the crisis involving journalist Ivan Gershkovich, the correspondent for the American newspaper "The Wall Street Journal," who is detained in a Russian prison on espionage charges. The Kremlin announced that "Russian President Vladimir Putin has not received any communication from Donald Trump," after the former U.S. president stated that he would utilize his connections with Putin in an attempt to secure Gershkovich's release.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, "True Social," that the journalist's release "will happen shortly after the presidential elections in the United States scheduled for November," as he aims to defeat President Joe Biden and return to the White House. Trump did not mention any communication that took place with Putin.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated: "Of course, there was no communication between Putin and Donald Trump." He added that any discussions regarding detained individuals "should be conducted with complete confidentiality. This is the only way to make our work effective." Gershkovich was arrested in Russia in March of last year on espionage charges, which he and the newspaper he works for, along with the Biden administration, have strongly denied.
