The Director General of the Giza Pyramids Area, Ashraf Mohi El-Din, commented on the news of a major discovery of a new massive structure near the Pyramid of Khufu (the Great Pyramid) in an empty area of the Western Necropolis in Giza. He stated that "there is a Japanese archaeological mission from Waseda University that conducted a radar archaeological survey during the last excavation season (2022-2023) after receiving approval from the Permanent Committee for Egyptian Antiquities, at the site of the Western Necropolis in the Giza Pyramids area."
The radar archaeological survey conducted in April 2023 revealed a cavity in the ground, but its configuration or whether it is empty or contains something inside remains unknown. Therefore, the Supreme Council of Antiquities formed an Egyptian-Japanese archaeological mission to excavate at the site of the cavity. The mission is currently engaged in excavation work, and so far, these efforts have not resulted in any new archaeological discoveries in the area. The General Director of the Pyramids stated that "as soon as the mission completes its work, it will prepare a detailed report on the results of these excavations, whether positive or negative, and submit it to the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities."
