The Romanian Maritime Administration reported today, Saturday, that the ship Mohammad-Z, flying the Tanzanian flag, sank in the waters of the Black Sea, 26 nautical miles from the Romanian city of Sfântu Gheorghe. The administration indicated that a distress call was received around 4:00 AM, and officers at the emergency center immediately dispatched the ships Artemis and Apollo to the incident area. Two border police vessels and two nearby commercial ships also headed to the incident site.
According to available information, the crew of the sunken vessel consisted of 11 individuals – nine Syrian nationals and two Egyptians. The commercial ship Michel, the closest to the disaster site, rescued eight of them. The search for the other three crew members, who are Syrian nationals, is ongoing. The Romanian Maritime Administration states that "the cause of the incident remains unknown at this time" and noted that "an investigation will be conducted to determine the causes and circumstances of the disaster."
