In an objective assessment of the parliamentary sessions convened to elect the President of the Republic, it becomes clear that a serious negotiation phase regarding the presidential election and filling the vacancy at the Baabda Palace, as well as in many public institutions, has not yet begun either internally or externally. It is expected that tomorrow's session will be quite similar to the previous one. The sharp local tensions appear likely to continue in the absence of dialogue or various rescue initiatives. The external factor has not developed into supportive and motivating action but remains within the framework of general advice and calls for the Lebanese to expedite the election of the new president. France has reiterated its advice and call for the swift election of a president, as stated by the ambassador in Lebanon, Anne Grillo, to various officials and politicians she met. Paris has neither proposed nor discussed any candidate name, avoiding discussions with some figures and deputies regarding candidates who could gain France's trust and support.
Member of the Democratic Gathering, MP Faisal Al-Sayegh, told "Al-Markazia": "It is not true that the political horizon, specifically regarding the election of the President of the Republic, is completely blocked as some portray. There is serious local and external movement to fill the vacancy in the presidential office and to prevent the extension of the void. From our side, as a Progressive Party, we communicate with everyone to bridge the differing positions and we have made considerable progress in this area. Additionally, there are French efforts with the relevant parties internally and externally to complete the French-Saudi-American vision, following the conclusion of maritime demarcation, for the election of a President of the Republic and the formation of a rescue government that implements reforms and returns the country to the path of recovery. Therefore, I believe that after the beginning of the new year, we may witness the election of a new president and not leave the situation as it is until next spring, as this poses significant security and social risks that the people cannot bear. This is evidenced by the fact that Total, the company authorized for exploration and drilling in Block 9, has begun the necessary preparations to commence work." He concludes by criticizing the culture of obstruction practiced by some, including the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, the largest investor in this matter, "as if his supporters are not part of this population struggling to secure a living."
