Erdogan on the War in Ukraine: Returning to the Negotiation Table

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that his country is closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine and calling for a return to the negotiation table. In a statement released by the Turkish presidential office following a phone call between Erdogan and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Thursday, it was noted that "the conversation discussed bilateral relations between Turkey and Brazil as well as international and regional issues." President Erdogan emphasized that Brazil's stance against the atrocities committed by Israel in Palestinian territories is commendable and that it is crucial to invigorate efforts to achieve a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. The statement highlighted that Erdogan asserted, "Despite Hamas agreeing to a ceasefire, Israel continues its attacks and practices mass killing, and it is essential at this stage to support initiatives recognizing the State of Palestine." The statement continued: "President Erdogan confirmed that Turkey is closely following the war between Russia and Ukraine and calls on both parties to return to negotiations and work towards establishing a just peace based on rights and law."
