Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani informed the Shiite Coordination Framework about the reasons for his visit to Washington, primarily aimed at arranging the bilateral relationship between Iraq and the United States, according to a framework official on Thursday. Framework official Amer al-Fayez stated that the Coordination Framework held a meeting on Wednesday, attended by Prime Minister al-Sudani, during which they discussed the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to the United States and the topic of electing a Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Al-Fayez added that al-Sudani presented the reasons for his visit to Washington, emphasizing that the purpose is to arrange the bilateral relationship between Iraq and the United States following the withdrawal of coalition forces, with ongoing discussions currently taking place among the joint military committees regarding the mechanisms for the withdrawal of forces from Iraq.
He explained that Iraq is keen on maintaining a friendly relationship with the United States that serves the interests of both countries in political, economic, and security aspects, as well as in military training and expertise. Al-Fayez confirmed that the visit aims to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the United States and that al-Sudani will accompany several ministers, members of parliament, and businessmen to ensure the success of this visit and to arrange the bilateral relationship.
Furthermore, he noted that al-Sudani will focus on developing economic relations between Iraq and the United States during his visit. The Iraqi Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Washington to meet with U.S. President Joe Biden on April 15, marking his first visit since taking office in October 2022.
