Egypt Responds to Bread Ration Reduction Claims After Price Increase

The Egyptian government has responded to reports on social media about a decision to reduce the amount of subsidized bread allocated to citizens on their ration cards. In this regard, the media center of the Cabinet contacted the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, which denied these claims, affirming that there had been no decision to cut the bread ration. It emphasized that the distribution of subsidized bread to citizens is proceeding normally, with an allocation of five loaves daily, totaling 150 loaves per month, at a price of 20 piasters per loaf, without any reduction in quantity or weight.

The ministry noted that the loaves provided on the card throughout the month are calculated in accumulated points, allowing ration card holders to redeem the difference in bread points for food and non-food items at various supply outlets. Citizens were urged to file complaints if bakeries fail to provide the full number of subsidized loaves allocated to them on their ration cards. It was also mentioned that Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly announced that the government would increase the subsidy price for bread from 5 piasters to 20 piasters starting next month.
