At least 11 people, mostly students, were killed in a collision in Indonesia, officials announced today, Sunday. The officials stated that the bus collided with several cars and motorcycles after apparently experiencing a brake failure in West Java, Indonesia, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, most of whom were students, and injuring dozens more.
West Java police spokesperson Jules Abraham Abast mentioned that the bus, carrying 61 students and teachers, was returning to a high school in Depok outside the capital Jakarta late Saturday from a graduation celebration in the mountainous resort area of Bandung. He added that the vehicle lost control on a downhill road, crossed lanes, and collided with several cars and motorcycles before hitting a utility pole.
Abast reported that 9 people died at the scene, and two others later died in the hospital, including a teacher and a local car driver. Additionally, 53 other individuals were taken to the hospital with injuries, some in critical condition. He stated, "We are still investigating the cause of the incident, but initial inquiries showed a malfunction in the brakes," according to the Associated Press.
