Former President Donald Trump's advisor Peter Navarro entered prison in Miami today to begin serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. Navarro is the first high-ranking official from the Trump administration to serve time due to actions related to the Capitol riots on January 6. The Supreme Court rejected Navarro's attempt to remain free while appealing his conviction on Monday.
During a press conference today, Navarro stated, "As I walk into this jail today, the justice system, as it stands now, will have dealt a serious blow to the constitutional separation of powers and executive privileges." He added that he should have been protected from being forced to testify under executive privilege as a former official in the Trump administration.
Navarro was sentenced after defying a subpoena from Congress in 2022 and was also ordered to pay a fine of $9,500. He was accused of working on a plan to delay Congress's certification of the 2020 presidential election. Multiple media outlets reported that Peter Navarro, who served as a trade advisor in former President Trump's White House, was convicted earlier this year for challenging a subpoena from a House committee. Navarro has become the second high-ranking former official under Trump to be convicted in matters related to attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
