Officially.. Spain and Ireland Recognize the State of Palestine

Spain and Ireland have officially recognized the State of Palestine today, Tuesday, as announced by the governments of both countries. The Spanish government adopted a decree formally recognizing the State of Palestine, as stated by the government spokesperson. The official announcement occurred during a government meeting in Spain. Before the meeting, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated in a televised speech from the Prime Minister’s Office in Madrid: "This is a historic decision with the sole aim of helping Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace." He added that the recognition of the State of Palestine is "a decision we do not adopt against any party, especially Israel, which is a friendly nation that we respect and appreciate, and we seek the best possible relationship with." The Irish government also announced its official recognition of the State of Palestine on Tuesday, indicating that it will appoint an ambassador to Palestine. Norway is expected to announce its official recognition of the Palestinian state later on Tuesday.
