Tunisia and NATO Discuss Enhancing Cooperation

Tunisian Defense Minister Imad Memmich discussed cooperation between Tunisia and NATO with the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer. The Tunisian News Agency reported that the two sides explored "ways to enhance cooperation mechanisms and expand its areas."

According to a statement from the Tunisian Ministry of Defense, Minister Memmich highlighted during the meeting the developments in cooperation with NATO, which has contributed to building the defense capabilities of the Tunisian armed forces, especially after Tunisia was granted the status of a major non-NATO ally in 2015.

The statement also noted that the minister emphasized the ministry's commitment to benefiting from multilateral partnership mechanisms with NATO and activating collaborative frameworks with the alliance in training, capacity building, and sharing expertise based on mutual respect and trust, which serves the interests of both parties.

For his part, Bauer praised the level of partnership between Tunisia and NATO, as well as "the development of the capabilities of the Tunisian army in all military fields," affirming NATO's commitment to "intensify cooperation forms and strengthen this partnership, continuing efforts to elevate and expand its scope."

During his visit to Tunisia, Bauer also met with Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar to discuss "the major challenges facing Mediterranean countries and how to address them within the framework of Mediterranean dialogue."

The two sides agreed to "intensify regular political dialogue" between Tunisia and NATO and recognized the "necessity of integrating new areas of cooperation between them, such as migration, climate change, and counter-terrorism."
