The Geneva International Institute for Peace Research announced that it has submitted a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the President of the European Commission for "complicity in war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel against the Palestinians." Former UN independent expert Alfred de Zayas released a statement about the initiative he leads within the Geneva International Institute for Peace Research (GIPRI) against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The statement emphasized that "the complaint calls for the ICC to investigate von der Leyen," noting that "there are reasonable grounds to believe that von der Leyen's unconditional support for Israel (military, economic, diplomatic, and political) has enabled the commission of ongoing war crimes and genocide in Gaza."
It confirmed that "von der Leyen, in her role as Commission President, has played a significant role in facilitating military support provided by the European Union to the Israeli army," pointing out that "von der Leyen has not imposed economic and military sanctions on Israel and has made many statements regarding providing diplomatic support to Israel." The President of the European Commission faces criticism for "adopting a pro-Israel stance" and her unconditional support for Israel since October 7, 2023.
