Dozens of unprecedented earthquakes over the past 40 years were recorded in Campi Flegrei near Naples in southern Italy, causing no significant damage but terrifying the residents, according to authorities. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported a tremor measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale at a depth of 2.5 kilometers. Minutes earlier, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck, followed by dozens of aftershocks.
The institute stated, "As of 19:51 local time (17:51 GMT), a series of earthquakes occurred in the Campi Flegrei area," which is a volcanic zone, "and 49 earthquakes were recorded." Mauro De Vito from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology noted that this series of earthquakes "is the strongest in the past forty years."
Firefighters reported on the platform "X" instances of "cracks" and "landslides," while videos filmed by residents showed the floor of a store in Pozzuoli, located in the Campi Flegrei area, covered with bottles of milk and alcohol that fell from the shelves. For his part, the city’s mayor, Luigi Mantsoni, stated on Facebook that schools in Pozzuoli would remain closed on Tuesday, where shelter centers were opened and tents were set up in a parking lot and a seaside square to accommodate frightened residents.
