As Israeli bombardment on the Gaza Strip continues for the 73rd consecutive day, the United Nations has renewed its call for an end to the war. Karl Skau, the deputy executive director and chief operations officer of the World Food Programme (WFP), warned that humanitarian operations in Gaza are on the verge of collapse. In a video posted by the WFP account on X today, he stated, "As Gazans become more desperate, with nowhere to go and nothing to eat, the need for an immediate ceasefire and opening of more border crossings for relief remains critical."
Furthermore, he emphasized the urgency of a immediate ceasefire and the importance of opening more border crossings for aid.
Simultaneously, Israeli bombardments on the strip persist, with reports of 35 fatalities and dozens of injured and missing due to Israeli forces targeting the Jabalia camp in northern Gaza, according to the Palestinian news agency. The shelling also hit a house in Rafah in the south of the strip, where searches are ongoing for victims under the rubble, according to Al Arabiya/Al Hadath information.
For many weeks, Israel has been carrying out heavy bombardments and airstrikes on the densely populated territory. The Israeli army has intensified its attacks in northern and central Gaza, as well as the south, particularly in Khan Younis, where Hamas leaders are believed to be hiding in underground tunnels.
The United Nations reported that 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced within the strip, with thousands crowded into inadequate camps in the south, or in UN schools, tents, and public spaces. They also warned of shortages in relief supplies, food, medicine, water, and fuel, among other necessities.
