British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has apologized for not attending all the ceremonies commemorating the D-Day landings in northern France, as he had to conduct a television interview during the British general election campaign. Opposition officials accused Sunak of bringing "shame" to the Prime Minister's office by missing a significant event attended by other world leaders in Normandy on Thursday.
Sunak participated in a British government event before returning to the UK. He was absent from the main ceremony at Omaha Beach, which was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and U.S. President Joe Biden. In a post on the platform "X" after the British event in Normandy, Sunak said: "I returned to the United Kingdom… upon reflection, it was a mistake not to stay in France longer, and I apologize."
With Sunak's party expected to lose the election on July 4, he sent his Foreign Secretary David Cameron to attend the ceremonies, where he was photographed alongside other leaders. Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, Sunak's main rival in the election, was also present.
