Dismissal of Peru Coach Due to Poor Results

The Peruvian Football Federation announced that "Juan Reynoso has been dismissed from his position as head coach of the national team today, Wednesday, following a series of poor results in the first matches of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup." Peru is currently at the bottom of the South American qualifiers ("CONMEBOL") with two points after two draws and four losses. Reynoso was appointed in 2022 to replace Argentine Ricardo Gareca, who led Peru to qualify for the 2018 World Cup for the first time in 36 years. A statement from the Peruvian Football Federation read: "Today it is our duty to announce that we have reached the best understanding to end his (Reynoso's) tenure as coach, and we wish him success in the next steps of his career." Peru will compete in the Copa America next year in Group A, which includes defending champion Argentina and Chile, one of the teams qualified from the North, Central America, and Caribbean qualifiers ("CONCACAF"). Peru will resume its World Cup qualifying campaign in September, facing Colombia and Ecuador.
